Gustav Klimt : the complete paintings by Gustav Klimt( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During his lifetime, Klimt was a controversial star whose works made passions run high; he stood for Modernism but he also embodied tradition. His pictures polarized and divided the art-loving world. Journalists and general public alike were split over the question: For or against Klimt? The present publication therefore places particular emphasis upon the voices of Klimt's contemporaries via a series of essays examining reactions to his work throughout his career. Subjects range from Klimt's portrayal of women to his adoption of landscape painting in the second half of his life. The cliche that Gustav Klimt was a man of few words who rarely put pen to paper is vehemently dispelled: no less than 231 letters, cards, writings and other documents--all known Klimt correspondence--are included in this monograph. This wealth of archival material, assembled here for the first time on such a scale, represents a major contribution to Klimt scholarship"--Publisher's description

Klimt : life and work : with 96 colour plates and 35 drawings in black-and-white by Susanna Partsch( Book )

5 editions published between 1999 and 2004 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When Klimt died on the February 6, 1918, all Vienna mourned the loss of their greatest painter. The impressive scale of the exhibition 'Dream and Reality: Vienna 1870-1930', mounted in Vienna, Paris and New York in recent years attests to the world-wide importance of Klimt's work today. Despite his humble origins, Klimt, through his extraordinary talent, achieved a position of great esteem in Viennese society. He was one of the founders of the 'Jugendstil' and president of the Vienna Secessin, a movement which had its counterpart in the equally controversial 'Sezession' in Berlin of which Munch was a member. Klimt became the spokesman for an enterprising new generation of artists and the movement won international acclaim, exhibiting work in the Secession House from 1898 onwards. The exhibition heralded a radical change in Klimt's style and the dawning of his 'golden period', examples of which are faithfully reproduced within the fine collection of color plates in this book. The author writes lucidly on the complexities and Klimt's genius, providing the reader with a fresh and inspiring insight into his work. There is also a comprehensive study of significant background elements such as the general development of art in Klimt's lifetime. The author writes, too, on the artist's friendship with Emilia Floge and on his erotic drawings, attempting an interesting and sensitive interpretation of Klimt's relationships with women. Klimt will remain one of the revolutionary artists to be revered by many, and this book pays tribute to the exquisite rarity of his art. -- from dust jacket

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designated as "degenerate" by the Nazis, Paul Klee (1879-1940) is today considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works stand out for the variety in their forms of artistic expression. His Tunisian water-colours depicting landscape, architecture and, above all, the North African light of this Mediterranean land constitute the true beginning of Klee's painting career. Although these paintings still fall under the heading of 'objective,' they already exhibit indications of his tendency toward abstraction and a language of forms

Schau mir in die Augen, Dürer! : die Kunst der Alten Meister by Susanna Partsch( Book )

6 editions published in 2018 in German and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
