Elijah by
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy(
)
506 editions published between 1925 and 2018 in 8 languages and held by 7,896 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A concert-recording from the minster at abbey Maulbronn performed by Peter Lika (bass, Elijah), Heidi Elisabeth Meier, Jolantha Michalska-Taliaferro, Hans Peter Blochwitz, The Kantorei Maulbronn and members of the SWR-symphony-orchestra. Conductor: Juergen Budday. Mendelssohn's Elijah, one of the most important oratorios of the nineteenth century, premiered in Birmingham in 1846 and was emphatically celebrated both by the public and the press. According to a contemporary review, Mendelssohn turned music "into a grand sacred service". Elijah is a biblical figure, and consequently the libretto is composed entirely from biblical texts. The oratorio lacks a continuous plot. Rather, important excerpts from the life of the prophet are strung together like snapshots, some of which are highly dramatic. The prophet's ascension into heaven concludes a series of powerful, dramatic and pathetic circumstances, effectively depicted by Mendelssohn music. The oratorio ends both with a somewhat mystical reference to the Messiah as the figure who truly consummates faith and the divine work, as well as a vision of divine grandeur. Despite the lack of a continuous plot, Mendelssohn manages to create gripping, dramatic episodes. The chorus plays a special!, important role. It sustains the action over long segments, taking the part of the people or of Baal's priests; elsewhere, it slips into the role of the community of the faithful ("Blessed is he who fears the Lord" or "He who persists until the end") and comments on the events. Mendelssohn, with the help of the minister Julius Schubring, essentially took the entire text from 1 Kings 17-19 and 2 Kings 1-2. Mendelssohn wrote Schubring on 2 November 1838, with regard to the character Elijah: "For Elijah I had in mind a proper prophet through and through, of the sort we could use again today: strong, zealous, as well as angry, furious and grim, in opposition to the rabble of the court and of the people, in opposition to nearly the whole world, and yet borne as if by angels' wings." Seen in this way, the prophet Elijah, and hence Mendelssohn's oratorio, is once again extremely relevant for us today

Concerto, E minor, for violin and orchestra, Op. 64 by
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy(
)
884 editions published between 1845 and 2020 in 9 languages and held by 4,247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1838 Felix Mendelssohn wrote to the violin virtuoso Ferdinand David informing him that he was working on a violin concerto " ... the opening theme, one in E minor runs through my head and it gives me no peace"; the concerto in the state described by Mendelssohn to David was never published in a performing edition. It was only rediscovered in 1988. One would think that such an important work would be adequately represented in modern editions true to the sources. Alas not even the score used today represents the orchestral parts Mendelssohn saw to print in 1845, but one heavily edited in the 1860s by Julius Rietz for the Mendelssohn Complete Edition. For the Bärenreiter Urtext edition, the Mendelssohn specialist R. Larry Todd has edited both the original version of the concerto as well as the later version known today. The first version of the concerto calls for the soloist to perform the orchestral tuttis, contains a shorter cadenza by Mendelssohn, many solo violin pitches in different octaves, passages with different orchestral scoring and many many surprises regarding articulation and dynamics. The later version goes back to the first edition orchestral parts published in 1845 and the piano reduction sanctioned by Mendelssohn. Todd makes use of all known sources including the letters between Mendelssohn and David as well as Mendelssohn and the original publishers where general schemes as well as specifics of articulation were exchanged. This first ever Urtext edition of one of the most popular violin concertos in the repertoire finally gives performers the opportunity of playing just what Mendelssohn wrote. The Bärenreiter Urtext edition offers the two versions of op. 64 back to back in score and parts together with facsimiles, an informative preface describing the genesis of the composition and a detailed critical commentary. This Bärenreiter Urtext edition offers: First ever Urtext edition of both versions of op. 64; Critical Commentary (Engl.) included with full score; Informative preface (Engl. / Ger.); Piano reductions each with an Urtext violin part and a second violin part prepared with fingerings and bowings. - Publisher

Symphony no. 4, A major, op. 90 : (Italian symphony) by
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy(
)
463 editions published between 1800 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 3,019 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1832, the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony, the "Italian", based on Mendelssohn's experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833, conducted by the composer. Today, the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks, though at its premiere and both the following performances, the work was not entirely positively received. Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834, he revised the last three movements, but did not complete this revision. To this day, the early version of the "Italian" is the one played everywhere, whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter's critical new edition, edited by Christopher Hogwood, includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833, together with the last three movements in the composer's revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version. - Publisher

Works for cello and piano by
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy(
)
64 editions published between 1987 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 2,097 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
It is well known that Felix Mendelssohn's sister Fanny was a highly talented musician, but fewer are familiar with the fact that there were two other musical siblings in the Mendelssohn family: Rebecka, a gifted singer, and Paul, a very competent amateur cellist. It is to Paul, a banker by profession, that we owe the existence of much of Felix's music for the instrument, which in spite of Beethoven's endeavours hadn't yet become firmly established as a duo partner of the piano. Fitting comfortably on a single disc, Mendelssohn's works for cello and piano are here presented by Christian Poltéra and Ronald Brautigam, who open with the Variations concertantes in D major, composed in 1829. Brautigam has recently released the composer's Lieder ohne Worte, performing them on a copy of a piano by Pleyel from 1830, and plays the same instrument on the present disc. Meanwhile, Poltéra has chosen to equip his 1711 Stradivarius cello with gut strings, and together the two musicians and their instruments create a sound which is both flexible, transparent and vigorous - ideal for Mendelssohn's scores. The two substantial sonatas, composed in 1838 and 1843, are separated on the disc by a brief 'Albumblatt' and a Romance sans paroles in D major, the only 'song without words' that Mendelssohn wrote for two instruments rather than piano solo
