The critique of pure reason : the critique of practical reason, and other ethical treatises : the critique of judgement by
Immanuel Kant(

1,942 editions published between 1 and 2022 in 17 languages and held by 19,497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Why this critique is called simply Critique of Practical Reason and not Critique of Pure Practical Reason, though the parallelism between it and the critique of speculative reason seems to demand the latter title, will be sufficiently shown in the treatise itself. Its task is merely to show that there is a pure practical reason, and, in order to do this, it critically examines reason's entire practical faculty. If it succeeds in this task, there is no need to examine the pure faculty itself to see whether it, like speculative reason, presumptuously overreaches itself. For if pure reason is actually practical, it will show its reality and that of its concepts in actions, and all disputations which aim to prove its impossibility will be in vain

"This entirely new translation of Kant's masterpiece follows the principles and high standards of all other volumes in The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant with extensive annotation, glossaries, and an index. This volume includes the indispensable first draft of Kant's introduction to the work. It is the only English edition to note the many differences between the first (1790) and second (1793) editions of the work, and among the copious citations and sources are references to the relevant passages on aesthetics in Kant's lectures on anthropology recently published for the first time in German." "All in all, this new edition offers the serious student of Kant a richer, more complete, and more accurate translation than has ever been available in English."--Jacket

Prolegomena to any future metaphysic by
Immanuel Kant(
Book
)
146 editions published between 1889 and 2020 in 11 languages and held by 5,079 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Kant is the central figure of modern philosophy. He sought to rebuild philosophy from the ground up, and he succeeded in permanently changing its problems and methods. This new, revised edition of the Prolegomena, which is the best introduction to the theoretical side of his philosophy, presents his thought clearly by paying careful attention to his original language. Also included are selections from the Critique of Pure Reason, which fill out and explicate some of Kant's central arguments (including famous sections of the Schematism and Analogies), and in which Kant himself explains his special terminology. The first reviews of the Critique, to which Kant responded in the Prolegomena, are included in this revised edition. The volume is completed by a historical and philosophical introduction, explanatory notes, a chronology and a guide to further reading."--Jacket

Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view by
Immanuel Kant(
)
165 editions published between 1833 and 2018 in 9 languages and held by 3,152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Kant describes the Anthropology as a systematic doctrine of the knowledge of humankind. (He does not yet distinguish between the academic discipline of anthropology as we understand it today and the philosophical.) Kant’s lectures stressed the "pragmatic" approach to the subject because he intended to establish pragmatic anthropology as a regular academic discipline. He differentiates the physiological knowledge of the human race -- the investigation of "what Nature makes of man" -- from the pragmatic -- "what man as a free being makes of himself, what he can make of himself, and what he ought to make of himself." Kant believed that anthropology teaches the knowledge of humankind and makes us familiar with what is pragmatic, not speculative, in relation to humanity. He shows us as world citizens within the context of the cosmos

The metaphysics of morals by
Immanuel Kant(
Book
)
355 editions published between 1797 and 2020 in 9 languages and held by 3,071 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Metaphysics of Morals is Kant's major work in applied moral philosophy in which he deals with the basic principles of rights and of virtues. It comprises two parts: the 'Doctrine of Right', which deals with the rights which people have or can acquire, and the 'Doctrine of Virtue', which deals with the virtues they ought to acquire. Mary Gregor's translation, revised for publication in the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy series, is the only complete translation of the whole text, and includes extensive annotation on Kant's difficult and sometimes unfamiliar vocabulary. A new introduction by Roger Sullivan sets the work in its historical and philosophical context. -- Back cover

Groundwork for the metaphysics of morals by
IMMANUEL KANT(
)
51 editions published between 1948 and 2021 in English and held by 3,042 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In this text, Kant sets out to articulate and defend the Categorical Imperative - the fundamental principle that underlies human moral reasoning - and to lay out the foundation for a comprehensive account of justice and human virtues. Here, Kant explains his conception of a good will and the special value he calls 'moral worth', analyses the difference between moral and non-moral reasons, and presents alternative formulations of the Categorical Imperative. Here too he argues that the moral beliefs presuppose "autonomy of the will" and that they are not based on an illusion."

Kant's views on education, which influenced the liberal and democratic ideals that guide educational theory today. Metaphysical foundations of natural science by
Immanuel Kant(
Book
)
143 editions published between 1786 and 2020 in 7 languages and held by 2,327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Kant was centrally concerned with issues in the philosophy of natural science throughout his career. The Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science presents his most mature reflections on these themes in the context of both his 'critical' philosophy, presented in the Critique of Pure Reason, and the natural science of his time. This volume presents a translation by Michael Friedman which is especially clear and accurate. There are explanatory notes indicating some of the main connections between the argument of the Metaphysical Foundations and the first Critique - as well as parallel connections to Newton's Principia. The volume is completed by an historical and philosophical introduction and a guide to further reading

If there exists on any subject a philosophy (that is, a system of rational knowledge based on concepts), then there must also be for this philosophy a system of pure rational concepts, independent of any condition of intuition, in other words, a metaphysic. It may be asked whether metaphysical elements are required also for every practical philosophy, which is the doctrine of duties, and therefore also for Ethics
